Santa Croce Square

Today, we will bring you in the most popular and dynamic district of Florence. There are plenty of colourful shops, leather artisans. The merchants will know how to awaken Mum and Dad curiosity. More than everything, they will intrigue the youngest ones.Dominated by the majestic Church, from which it takes its name, this area was formerly an island formed by two branches of the Arno river. As it was quite an isolated area, the Franciscan chose it as their headquarters. The square was realized approximatively a century after the settlement of the Franciscan to welcome the crowds of devoted followers. The large square maintains its original shape and is still closed by sumptuous noble buildings dating from the 15th or 17th Century. Today, it is the center of the Florentine nightlife.  There, you will find a lot of young people who enjoy meeting on the stairs of the Church to look at the improvised spectacles, done by street artists and a lot of families appreciate having an aperitif or going to one of the many typical restaurants of the area with their children.

CALCIO STORICO FIORENTINO (Florentine historical football)

Will you be on holiday in Florence in June? You should absolutely see such a unique and exceptional event that takes place in this square: the famous “Calcio storico fiorentino”. It is a tradition born in the 15th Century. Historical personalities such as Lorenzo de’ Medici and many other nobles have played this sport. It really is a unique and incredible event, organized with traditional costumes. It is not advised to go there with your children, as it is a quite violent sport.  Take a look at the website, book your tickets and have fun!

You will be amazed by the vision of the Santa Croce Church standing out, sumptuous, on the square. It is one of the most famous European churches and has been built by Arnolfo di Cambio. The frescoes were made by Giotto and Donatello. It became the Pantheon of the famous Italian, as it is the burial place of people such as Dante, Michelangelo, Galileo, Foscolo, Rossini. The treasures of Santa Croce are considered as the consequence of the “Stendhal syndrom”, an illness caused by the vision of masterpieces so powerful by their beauty and their aesthetics that the human eye does not tolerate them.

Excellent experience for children and adults. The Galileo’s Museum houses one of the most important collection of scientific instruments. It is a testimony of the importance a developed part of the exponents of the Medici’s dynasty gave to science.Modern, interactive, the museum offers various activities aimed to the families in order for them to discover in an amusing way the wonderful scientific instruments of the museum. Various interactive visits and tutorials will captivate all the family into the scientific world through the game experience.

In the heart of Florence, the Horne Museum offers itself as a space to live again the past, between the 15th and 16th Century, and discover the customs and traditions and the art of the city. It is perfect for families as it offers visits, itineraries, animations, theatre spectacles and multimedia tutorials to transmit emotions to the public of any age. In particular, special itineraries were realized for children as “Live in the palace”, “the furniture tells a story” or “Gold and colours” which are concluded by a game or a creative activity.

Santa Croce Family Apartments
The location was amazing and the rooms were stunning. Really well equipped and comfy, plenty of space and the lady who met us was very helpful and informative. Very quiet even though it was minutes away from the Duomo. Would definitely return again. It was perfect!

San Croce features, on the main floor, a large living-dining area (with sofa bed), fully-equipped kitchen, bedroom, and bath with shower; and on the second floor, a large master loft with comfortable bed, walk-in closet, and bath with tub and shower. Large windows let in plenty of light. The apartment is located just 18 minutes’ walk from Santa Maria Novella train station, 10 minutes from the spectacular Duomo, 5 minutes from beautiful Santa Croce church, and 10 minutes from the Uffizi Gallery and the Arno River.
